Environmental Compliance Ltd was set up in South Wales in 2001. Since then, the company has grown year on year with offices now in Cardiff, Birmingham, Sheffield and Newcastle Upon Tyne, giving Environmental Compliance a comprehensive national coverage.

Environmental Compliance Ltd are in top 5 UKAS/MCERTS Air Emissions Test Houses five in the UK and provides planning, permitting, occupational hygiene testing and consultancy, environmental consultancy & training services to clients throughout the UK and Europe.

Meet The Staff!

David has over 25 years experience in occupational hygiene and environmental fields, both in industry and in consultancy. This includes a wide range of monitoring for:

  • Chemical and physical parameters particularly welding fume, paints and solvents, respirable and inhalable dusts
  • Noise (Workplace and Environmental)
  • Hand-arm and whole body vibration
  • Stack Emissions
  • Auditing and testing of Local Exhaust Ventilation Systems

David is a Member within the Faculty of Occupational Hygiene (British Occupational Hygiene Society) and a Chartered Member of the Institute of Occupational Safety and Health. He will be mentoring Catherine Wright who has recently been awarded the Certificate of Operational Competence in Occupational Hygiene.

Darren Storey - Occupational Hygiene Consultant

Darren joined Environmental Compliance in August 2009 working alongside Antony Sumner in expanding the company’s Occupational Hygiene Services. This will be the third time that Antony and Darren have worked together in the last 10 years, having both been at Alcontrol and RPS in the past.

With 25 years experience in the field of Occupational Hygiene, Darren’s main areas of expertise include:-

  • Local Exhaust Ventilation examination and testing - a holder of the BOHS proficiency certificate P601 (specified in HSE guidance note HSG258 as the recognised qualification for determining proficiency in undertaking thorough examination and testing of LEV systems)
  • Occupational Exposure Monitoring - planning and undertaking a range of both routine and one-off comprehensive sampling/monitoring exercises throughout UK/Europe/Middle East for a large number of commercial and industrial clients
  • Workplace Noise Surveys - monitoring and advice in accordance with the Control of Noise at Work Regulations (including noise source investigation, area mapping etc.)

Antony Sumner - Manager

Antony joined Environmental Compliance Ltd in July 2009 to help strengthen the position of Environmental Compliance in the market place and to compliment the services already offered from the Cardiff and Birmingham offices.

Antony’s specialist areas include:

  • Stack Emissions Monitoring - 10 years plus experience in the stack emissions market working in all industry sectors throughout the UK, Europe and the Far East.
  • Training for Process Operators and Legislative Bodies - Conducting training courses on the requirements of BS EN 14181 for both samplers and process operators.  Providing bespoke training courses and advice on the requirements of the Environment Agency OMA scheme.  Providing training for overseas test houses, process operators and legislators on the UK approach to European legislation in relation to industrial and ambient air emissions strategies.
  • Quality Management Systems - 10 years plus experience in the set up and running of various management systems in relation to analytical chemistry, asbestos, stack emissions operations to the requirements of UKAS (ISO17025, ISO17020) and for the Ministry of Defence (ISO9000).  Author of over 100 sampling and analytical methodologies that have gained UKAS accreditation.
  • Occupational Hygiene and Health - the provision of technical advice and the set up of monitoring strategies and health surveillance regimes to aid employers meet the ever changing demands of employer/employee related legislation.

Sarah Burley - Principal Consultant

Sarah joined Environmental Compliance in December 2008 and is a member of our rapidly expanding consultancy team.

With a background in obtained chemistry and environmental legislation, Sarah focuses mainly on obtaining planning and permitting for the waste to energy sector. Sarah is currently a member of the Royal Society of Chemistry and is working towards becoming a Chartered Chemist.

Sarah’s specialist areas include:

  • Environmental Legislation - including Environmental Permitting, Waste Management, Town and Country Planning (Environmental Impact Assessment).
  • Planning Support and Preparation of Environmental Impact Assessment - across a number of sectors including waste to energy, housing development, road improvement schemes and wind farms.
  • Preparation of Environmental Permit Applications, Variations and Surrenders - across a number of sectors including incineration, energy generation, waste management, chemicals and non-ferrous metals.
  • Environmental Management - the provision of technically competent management of EPR Permitted sites.
  • Environmental Auditing - compliance with environmental permits, duty of care and environmental management systems.
  • Site Investigation - design and supervision of major site investigation and remediation strategies.

From the above, my main areas of expertise lie in planning, preparation of Environmental Statements and the permitting of industrial installations. However, over the last six years I have been involved in almost all aspects of environmental consultancy and pride myself on being able to adapt to new challenges and learn quickly.  My chemistry background also allows me to quickly understand most industrial processes.  It is only by fully understanding a client’s business that one can assist them to realise their aspirations and take them forward.

Matthew Wright - Business Development Manager

Matthew has worked for Environmental Compliance  for nearly 4 years and is responsible for all aspects of New Business Development as well as ongoing liaison with a number of clients for which he is Account Manager.

Matthew joined Environmental Compliance Ltd from the Environment Agency where he worked as the Regional Monitoring Specialist for 2 years. During this period, Matthew was responsible for conducting the Operator Monitoring Assessment (OMA) audits throughout Wales and providing specialist support and advice to both site inspectors and operators on a range of monitoring issues, including BS EN 14181.

Matthew has gained over 20 years experience in the Environmental Monitoring Industry ranging from conducting Emission Monitoring Campaigns, Business Development and Environmental Regulation.  Matthew’s recent experience over the past 5 years has primarily involved Environmental Regulation, necessitating an up to date knowledge of current and proposed standards, particularly BS EN 14181.

Clare Taylor Principal Planning Consultant
Clare Taylor joined Environmental Compliance Ltd in September 2010 as a Principal Planning Consultant within the Environmental Consultancy Team. She is a Chartered Town Planner and has recently become and Associate of Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment (IEMA) with an exam pass score of 97%.

Her extensive planning and knowledge gained for working for over twenty years within both the public and private sectors will significantly broaden the planning capabilities of the company.

She has worked in a wide variety of planning disciplines ranging from strategic policy planning through to the preparation planning applications and appearing as an expert witness at Planning Inquiries. More recently she has concentrated on the delivery of large scale infrastructure projects through the planning system, these include, waste, minerals and renewable energy schemes as well as road and rail projects.

Throughout her career Clare has been fortunate to develop her Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) skills; these have been gained both by preparing EIA’s to support planning applications and from reviewing submitted EIA’s on the behalf of local planning authorities.
